God’s Living Word by Margaret Feinberg

Publisher's Description

What is your favorite kind of book to read? Most of us find great satisfaction in reading—whether by snuggling down with a great biography, savoring a collection of poetry, or enjoying a mind-bending mystery novel. But have you ever considered that what you’re going to read affects how you read it?

Understanding the different genres or writing styles of the Bible prepares us to get more out of the Scripture every time we read. The Bible is literature. When we know something about the background, purpose, and writing style, we can learn to appreciate God’s message all that much more!

In this unique study, women will explore the genres of writing in the Old and New Testaments, such as law, narrative history, wisdom writings, and epistles. Books of the Bible that may have seemed hard to read or disconnected from our modern world will suddenly come alive in a whole new way. Along the way, we will begin to lay hold of depth and delight of God’s Word—not just as ancient writings, but as a book that is living, active, and more relevant to our daily lives than we ever imagined.

Features include:

  • 12 sessions of interactive Bible study

  • Perfect for individual or group study

  • Tips for leading a great group included

Let's Talk Money

Let's Talk Money

  • Calgary First Church of the Nazarene (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In a world where money is power and excess is desired, we look at those who seemingly have it all with measures of adoration and envy. Jesus Himself spoke more about money than about love in his lifetime. Money is captivating, and its significance is undeniable.

Why was money so important for Jesus to speak about? How does it relate with our hopes, desires, and dreams? How does our relationship with money affect our relationship as a community and more importantly, how does it affect our relationship with God? What should we do with money?

What is money?

Come join us for a few hours as we explore the concept of finances through a Jesus-centered and biblical lens, covering both good stewardship and practical financial knowledge. The presentation is based on scripture, our team's past 14 years of experience in financial ministry, and testimonies from our struggles and walk with God in this area. We will have time for Q&A along with the opportunity to pray together as a church and for individuals.

Here is a preliminary agenda subject to changes.

10:00 - 10:10 - Initial Pastor's Welcome
10:10 - 10:40 - Testimonies and Introduction to Biblical Financial Principles
10:40 - 11:20 - Financial Session 1 - Practical Application
11:20 - 11:30 - Coffee Break
11:30 - 12:10 - Financial Session 2 - Practical Application
12:10 - 12:30 - Summary and Wrap-Up
12:30 - 12:45 - Q&A along with Lunch (Lunch is provided!)
12:45 - 13:30 - Roundtable Discussions

Speakers:

  • Matthew Wan, CFP

  • Byron Wong, PFP

  • Ivan Wong, P. Eng.

Hosted by Team Integrity Financial

Leadership Workshop: The Life of David

Leadership Workshop: The Life of David

Instructor: Mark Buchanan, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Ambrose University

The Life of David...a real man and leader in real time...seeking wisdom for our own life and time.

David was a man after God's own heart. He was also utterly human and deeply flawed - wise, courageous, compassionate, but also prone to anger, lust, fear, and more. He's not so much a model as a mirror. Though much about him inspires us, not everything invites our admiration or imitation. But everything - his character, his prayers, his relationships, his decisions, his actions, his mistakes - demands our full attention and prayerful reflection. We will explore the David story, not to find "leadership principles" but to reflect on the life of a real man and leader in real time, seeking wisdom for our own life and time.

Lunch is included in the workshop.

There are only two options on how the universe came to be: by chance or design. Either the universe came from nothing with no purpose OR the universe was planned by an Intelligent Designer who finely-tuned it for life. At Faith Beyond Belief’s Be Ready 2019 conferences in Calgary and Edmonton, hear scientists explain how God can be found in science. Other topics include how to love our gay neighbours without compromising Biblical truth, the problems with naturalism and how to speak to skeptics about God.

The Art and Craft of Engaged Preaching

Description

Joyce Rees, Lead Pastor at Epic Vineyard Church will be the guest speaker.

In an era of profound story telling, preaching can seem culturally obsolete. The strength of great preaching goes beyond exegesis. To be effective, story-telling is essential. In fact, in the business world story-telling is touted as the premier communication skill. This course will teach both the art and craft of engaged preaching by tying biblical text to story, and vice-versa.

Lunch is included in the workshop. Let us know if you have any dietary concerns.

Don't live in Calgary but want to participate? This workshop is available by livestream (click on Tickets for more info).

This workshop can also be taken for 1-credit ($420). To register for 1-credit course contact registrar@ambrose.edu
